Overnight Open Thread (5 Apr 2014)
— CDR M

Aw, poor baby. Democrat Jim Moran thinks he's not paid enough.

Aside from the $174,000 base pay these turds get from us, we also give them a generous allowance to cover the cost of housing and staff along with a plethora of freebies like haircuts, office supplies, health insurance, travel and postage.

Most of these clowns become millionaires in their first term in office simply because Congress exempts itself from Stock Market insider trading laws that would send ordinary folks like us to prison.

Then there are the gifts and favors bestowed on these jerkwads by lobbyists and other special interests, particularly on the Democrat side. I’m sure the gun control lobby alone pours buckets of money over his head for his “principled” stand on an assault weapons ban.

I was unable to find out Mr. MoranÂ’s net worth but considering that heÂ’s been a Congress whore for 23 years IÂ’d reckon heÂ’s worth at least several million dollars. Not bad for a poor boy from Virginia struggling to get along on a congressmanÂ’s pay.

Well, you can always quit if the pay ain't good enough Mr. Moran. Pillow Fight Day

Just a reminder, it is International Pillow Fight Day today.

ThermoNERFular War

Yes. This needs to be a real thing and not an April Fool's Day joke. NERF Nuke. This would be awesome at work.

Chemistry Jokes

War on E-cigs

Good God. The growing hysteria over e-cigs is getting out of hand. Soaring numbers of people are being poisoned by e-cigs, doctors warn. I guess these doctors missed the part where 5 times as many folks were poisoned by concentrated laundry detergent packs. Kids will get into anything left out and about. To focus on e-cigs is ridiculous.

Gears Of War

When mechanical analog computers ruled the waves. I love this part about why they didn't digitize the Iowa class battleships.

“We found that digitizing the computer would improve neither the reliability nor the accuracy of the system and recommended, ‘Don't bother.’” Even without digital computers, the Iowa could fire 2,700-pound “dumb” shells nearly 30 miles inland with deadly accuracy, within a circle of probable error of around 80 meters. Some of its shells had circles of destruction larger than that.

Crosswing Difficulties

I still have not so fond memories of landing at Lajes Field in the Azores with some pretty nasty crosswinds. One second we would be within limits for the aircraft, the next second we'd be out of limits. Just had to time the touchdown for when we were within limits. I know why the runway is 300 feet wide and we used all of it up.

A Museum Of What?

I guess there is a museum for everything. Welcome to the Museum of Erectile Dysfunction. Historical treatments seem to be a bit painful.

This electrostimulation device from the 1880s may look innocuous enough - until you find out that the short cylinder goes up the rectum, while the length of the longer probe is inserted in the urethra. One has a positive charge, one has a negative charge, and together they pack a wallop intended to jolt the genitalia back into action.

21 My heart bleeds for those poor Congresspersons, slaving away in their tiny offices, motivated only by a selfless goal of doing good, and accidentally becoming rich while writing laws that specifically exempt themselves. Martha Stewart basically went to jail for putting plastic in the bin labeled paper compared to what these scum do on a daily basis. Best part is that don't have to be attractive or smart to excel in their jobs, just not blatantly corrupt!

44 27 Nah. If you don't already have a stimulant addiction, you probably don't want one. All stimulants raise blood pressure and the risk of heart disease. And you'd probably gain the weight back once you quit, plus then you'd have withdrawal. No fun. Nicotine is not good for you. Getting it via e-cigs is just monumentally better than getting it via Breathing In Fire.

61 Honest e-cig query: Would it be worth it to take up e-cigs to help lose weight, i.e., try to get the weight loss benefits of smoking without the emphysema and lung cancer? I'm looking for any help shedding some tonnage. *** Dude. Seriously. I have gained 40 lbs since being out of work on disability and it never would have occurred to me to ever think of e-cigs as a potential solution. The truth is this: If there were a healthful, easy way to lose weight, it wouldn't come so cheap as an e-cig. Instead, it would cost thousands of dollars and people would be lines up for miles to buy it. The reason people who smoke lose weight is because of the damage it is doing to their bodies. As for the oral fixation part of smoking, suck on a sugar-free piece of candy or gum, but don't trade one unhealthy addiction for another.

127 Logprof, allow me to second (or third, or fourth) what Peaches said. I spent 20 years of my youth as a personal trainer. The best thing you can do for yourself is get out and walk. Really. Just walk. If you want to get fancy, subtract your age from the # 220, then take 60% (or so) of that - walk at a pace that gets your heart rate to that # and sustain it. Minimum 20 minutes per day, 3days per week. Preferably more. A lot more. you don't need to kill yourself, Just get out and walk. A doggeh would be a good excuse if you don't already have one. Does that make sense? Let's say I'm 50 years old... 220 - 50 = 170. 170 x 60% = 102. If burning fat is my goal, I want to walk (or bike, or whatever) at a pace that will get my heart rate to 102 beats per minute, then sustain that for an extended time. The mor the merrier. If you go too high (70% +), you stop burning fat as efficiently, and get into anaerobic exercise, so maintain that 60% ish rate. I could go on if you want...

Then I take the train downtown and walk more, but that is all flat for the most part.

Posted by: navybrat at April 05, 2014 11:02 PM (JgC5a ------- Well, since you've mentioned it, "cross training" is a great way to go. bounce between 60% - 85% of your max heartrate (220 - your age) and you are getting the benefits of both fat-burning & cardio. Unless you're Olympic caliber (or striving to be), there is no benefit to exceeding 85% of your max HR. One could run a marathon every two weeks & it wouldn't be exercise. To get any benefit, consistency is the key - minimum 3 days per week. Minimum. Fat loss? It's best to commit to every day. That way, if you miss a day or two per week, you're still doing great (5 days/week is great).

395 Long day today. Started at 6 AM when I loaded the guns up and went to the range. The 30-06 is now sighted in for 100 yards and is ready to take on the nefarious North American hoofed rat. I still suck with the pistol, but I can at least shoot minute of dickbeater at 15 yards. Also, I tweaked in the new magazines for Granddad's High Standard, so now I have three functional magazines for that vintage .22 pistol.

The day ended with a cruise-in at Lenoir NC, a 3 hour trip each way. I just got home and I'm beat, I'm taking the train to Slumbertown as soon as my after-action report is done.

Tomorrow...well, I guess technically it's today...I have nothing to do and it will probably take me all day. I'm going to get an early start by sleeping late.

Later roonz and roonettez, fear no evil!

Running your own business is scary as hell sometimes, and starting up is especially hard.  I just figured that I would rather starve than work for another company that is going to make a lot of money off of me and arbitrarily let me go.  I have been mostly unemployed for 4 years.  Had short and awful stints with some very bad companies and executives.  The atmosphere out there is horrible and the companies know it.  They just don't give a shit about employees.

If we go to the Rio, which is not on the strip but close enough to the strip we can get rooms for around 100 to 120 a night, maybe better if we get more people. if no one cares about proximity to the strip we could get lower rates. anyway, I have never stayed at the rio but I hear it has all the amenities of a strip hotel including a pool scene. my assumption is the horde will want to hang together some of the time so having a big place with lots of options would be good. anyway, I need more info from the horde.

Then Scorsese did something of a "The Graduate" takeoff by playing the Lemonheads version of "Mrs. Robinson" while showing DiCaprio (as Belfort) going to a min-security jail in Nevada by school bus. And a shot of Belfort enjoying himself playing tennis behind barbed wire. Finally, Belfort doing what he does today: his seminars. And a final shot of the large crowd at the seminar, as "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" starts to play. Incredibly good flick. And I like/appreciate that it contains *no* political sucker punches whatsoever.

588 Good evening, Horde! It's our last night in Cancun. Dave and I blew off the awards dinner portion of the evening, and instead I went to pick up some awesome antijito style food while he watched the UConn game. We ate and watched the Wildcats win, then went to the beach party. Now I back in the room and he's out doing the hob and/or nob that would make me want to stab myself. We leave tomorrow morning with a stopover in Charlotte, I think. Home to kiss Little goodnight!

590 RWC: oh, there's also a scene where the Feds *try* to get Belfort to get his #1 friend/assistant to spill the beans on Stratton's dastardly deeds. They wire him up and send him to dinner with him, but Belfort shows him a post-it reading "Don't incriminate yourself, I'm wearing a wire." That's when the Feds give up and raid the place.

591 I've spent over a month of my life staying at the Rio in Vegas, and it's an average to good hotel that needs some remodeling. The Morons would be happy there as they have a good range of food price point places, including a pretty killer buffet. 594 Steve, I had a lot of Marines as employees. They're Americans. They range from the magnificent to whining losers. Mostly just fine, but hey, things can happen.

This was a Nationalist Chinese Marine. The boss and I had both been raised on the stories of them swimming to the mainland from Quemoy and Matsu, raiding a town, and swimming out. We very suitably peed down our expensively-suited pant legs.

He got the job, it was great, his wife left him, he moved (up) three times, got a better wife, and now has to bitch about the property taxes in Northern Virginia. I guess his long-distance swimming improved too.

Then all Jordan can think about is retrieving her money before the Feds can find it, as his Swiss banker (played by Jean Dujardin) advises him. He finds out about all of this while running Stratton Oakmont from his yacht in Italy. Belfort then bullies his family and captain into sailing to Switzerland, even though Naomi's furious they can't go straight to London for her aunt's funeral. So guess what... Belfort & Co. encounter the perfect storm on the way to Geneva. Again, it's fantastically funny.

686 are you seriously bouncing moron's comments? I tried to do that. Was a pain, printing them out, transferring to Silly Putty, then getting it into a ball with the comment on the outside just to see if it would bounce. Any bounce that did occur seemed to be more the Silly Putty than the comment itself.

708 Good morning moron and ettes Scariest landing I ever had was on an Alleganey Airline flight landing in Atlanta in the early 70s flying home on leave for Xmas. I'm talking half sideways, wing tip about touching the ground, shit falling out of the overhead , people screaming and crying. The pilot gathered it up taxied to terminal thanked us for flying Allenganey Airlines and that was that

709 574 Obama has never fired anyone because he has never had a job. Ever. This is the first time in world history that a superpower has elected a leader who has never held a job. My 13 year old has more real world experience that Teh JEF. We have collectively committed suicide. Death by Incompetance in leadership. 719 Morning all. Up early after going to sleep late. This blows. What's up?

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at April 06, 2014 03:26 AM (ojnk6)

720 Had a scary landing in Atlanta after Andrew in 92. We tried to fly in from Orlando, but due to after storms, got sent to Jacksonville for more fuel after circling Atl for about 90 minutes. Came back and the pilot went in. Just asbout at landing. A wind shear kicked in, and the plane got slammed down on the right side, blowing out right side and front tires. Came down on the left side and killed those tires as well. Ended up in the grass off the side of the runway. Took buses to the terminal. Feel lucky to still be here.
